Mary Denk, Carol Ballerstein, Ruby Pinter, Kathleen, Hasenohrl, Trina Tiffany, and Joyce Lohr attended the spring District III meeting on May 9, 2019 in Wausau.


2019 Brat Fry  Barbara Viegut and Jerry Sjostrom are helping fry brats, hamburgers, and hot dogs to raise money for the MAREA scholarhip.  Carol Ballerstein, Joan Zoellner, Carol Subera, and Ruby Pinter are busy selling this delicious food.

Marshfield Area Retired Educators' received a grant from Wisconsin Retired Educators' foundation, to support public education.  Twenty one seniors, from area high schools participated in a signing ceremony to celebrate their selection as an education major.  They each received a $20 dollar gift card from QuickTrip/Amazon.  These 21 seniors had all applied for two $500 dollar scholarships funded by MAREA members brat fries.  Paul Huther, Stratford, received one of the scholarships.


MAREA member, Doreen Schultz gave a three day workshop in Athens.  It was very successful and participants took home a finished sunflower picture.
Carol Subera was the receiver of Wisconsin Association of Family and consumer Sciences Leader of the Year Award.

  At the District III WREA Meeting, President Ruby Thomas was presented with a facsimile of a check in the sum of $132,960 which represents 5,540 hours of volunteer work done by MAREA members this past year.

November 2018 spotlight shown on Linda Dosch.  She told about her life in Minnesota, Montana, and Wisconsin.  She was a speech therapist.

Jane Wagner gave a presentation on a fundraiser for the Marshfield 
Communlity Athletic Department.
Lois Glinski gave a very interesting 5 minute spotlight at the June Meeting.  When she retired from teaching, she traveled to do estimates on property and belongings that were part of an estate or that were destroyed through fires, ect.  
Plus she is new MAREA member.  Welcome aboard.

Mavis Wood spoke about husband, John's death at home and how she is coping with her grief.  Our sympathy goes out to her and her family.

Five Minute Spotlight was given by Eileen Keller, who showed several of her rugs and embroidered items. Eileen taught in a rural school and her dad took her to her teaching job on a toboggan pulled by a horse.  Then she taught many grades in the Medford Elementary School for 48 years.  She also taught Title One.

2016-2017
Carol Ballerstein, MAREA retired educator, delivered books to Stratford first year teachers. The teachers are from left to right, Devon Gorman, Middle School Special Education, Carol Ballerstein presenter, Jackie Moss, High School Social Studies.

Marshfield Area Retired Eductors recived a $100 grant through the WREA to welcome new teachers with a personal visit from a retired teacher and a copy of the book, "First Days of School" by Harry & Rosemary Wong.  Thirty five books were distributed along with a letter of welcome to the teaching profession.

September 2017, 
5 Minute Spotlight 

 The Five Minute Spotlight was on Annette McCabe.  Annette gave information on herself, 
her family and her educational career.  She retired in 2005 and one of her main hobbies is to travel.  She encouraged members to donate eye glasses through the Lions Club.  Glasses are sent to needy people in other countries.





5 Minute Spotlight shown on Cindee Loos.  She came from a large family.  She was one of 14 children.  She taught in Milwaukee and Loyal, she also did administrative work in Thorp.  After 36 years, Cindee retired.  Now she enjoys spending time with her mother.  She also enjoys planting flowers.
The 5 minute spotlight was shown on our newest member, Harry Toufar.  Harry gave a brief talk on his career of 39 years in the Spencer School District.  Harry, although "Retired", is now the substitute coordinator for the Spencer School district and is also doing substitute teaching.  

 Installation of Ruby Thomas, President-Elect was held.  President Ruby Pinter gave Ruby Thomas a snowflake.  The snowflake symbolizes the uniquesness Ruby brings as the President-elect of MAREA.
Barbara Viegut, Shari Stangl, Dorothy Halle, and Doreen Schultz were recognized for attending every MAREA meeting during the 2015-2016 year.

Ruby Pinter was installed by President by Kathleen Hasenhorl.  She received a red rose which is a symbole of her office.  It symbolized that she brings her own unique flaver to the office as she plns for her move to presidency.


Marlene Broeske was installed as the treasuer.  As a symbol of her office she was presented with a yellow flower.  It symbolized that, just like the gold coin funds which she has protected for the last two year, she needs to continue to be honest and truthful in her recording of the financial activities of the MAREA to illuminate the business activities of the organization.

2015-2016
The following MAREA members attended the state WREA convention, Running the "Rapids" of Change for 65 Years:  Joyce Lohr, Mary Denk, Carol Ballerstein, Carol Subera, Jerome Sjostrom, Kathleen Hasenohrl, and Doreen Schultz.  The second picture included Ruby Pinter, Ruby Thomas, Cynthia Loos and Dorothy Dietsche.  (Missing from the picture is Dorothy Halle).The meeting was held in
 Wisconsin Rapids on September 26-28, 2016.

The 5-Minute spotlight shone on Trina Tiffany. Trina is currently teaching early childhood at Mid-State Technical College after a series of occupations beginning with Pediatric  Occupational Therapy, running an early childhood program on Marshall Islands, and running Bright Horizons Childcare Center in Marshfield.

meeting at Black River Falls on May 10.




Kristine Hafferman, music teacher, at the Edgar School District was presented the $2000 Challenge Award on May 10, 2016. The District III meeting was help at Black River Falls.   Her grant entails that she will teach a summer school class with elementary students.  She will teach songs from the 50's and then the students will sing at nursing homes.  The students sang songs for the attendees and invited everyone to sing with them.  Students also handed out instruments so that that attendees could play along.  A fun time was held by all.


These MAREA members presented Principal Joy Redman with a $50.00 check.  The funds were provided through WREA Education grant.  





April 18, 2014

5 Minute Spotlight
 Doreen Schultz from Athens, WI, gave a short talk about her teaching career.  Doreen was a fourth grade teacher in the Marathon School District.  Doreen spoke about enjoying her teaching career but was really enjoying retirement. She is an avid reader, plus she volunteers twice a week at Athens Elementary School.  She spoke briefly about her children.  Tony is an  organic farmer on the family farm, Ben was in the media field and now distributes beer, and Dana is doing non-profit work. She spends a  lot of time with her three grandchildren.

in her grandson, Riley's second grade classroom.  She provides
challenge math for a group of second grade students.



Our new member, Trina Tiffany, is from 
Athens. She retired from the preschool program in the Marshfield School District.  She now works for Midstate Technical College in Stevens Point, WI teaching adults about early education. 


Foreign Exchange Students Cynthia Dummermuth from Switzerland, Arnon Meemongkol from Thailand, Sebastian Soerensen from Denmark, and Wujin Shi from China are enjoying a game of pool after the MAREA meeting.

March 21, 2016 Spotlight
Ruby Thomas of Marshfield WI, gave a five minute talk on her walk into and through education.  Ruby was a member of a large farm family.  She graduated from UW Stevens Point, taught elementary education in Stevens Point, taught reading in Marshfield, and eventually taught art in the Spencer School District.

November 16, 2015 Spotlight


Dorothy Halle told antidotes about her elementary education and how she began working as  support staff, where she worked 35 years for the Marshfield School District.

September 21, 2015 Spotlight


Joan Zoellner first worked as a CNA.  After that experience, she decided to attend the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point to become a teacher.  She graduated with a degree in elementary education.  She especially enjoyed dorm experience.   When attending the university, she worked part time as a librarian.  After 35 years of teaching primary grades, she retired from the Marshfield School District. She enjoys reading, quilting, and playing cards.
August 17, 2015 Spotlight

Kathleen Hasenohrl graduated with a nursing degree from St. Joseph School of Nursing.   She finished her career teaching at Mid-State Technical College after 29 years.  She taught health sciences and started the surgical technician program.  She was the Associate Dean for the Health Careers Division.

Spotlight
Barb Sinz gave the member 5-minute spotlight.  She grew up near Menomonie and taught in Edgar.  She always enjoyed school.  It was her 7th grade teacher and high school biology teacher that influenced her decision to become a teacher.  She loved teaching kindergarten classes and retired 5 years ago.
Carol Ballerstein, Linda Christianson, and Marlene Broeske are enjoying the speaker, Amy Wiza, who spoke about Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partnership.
District III meeting was held at Sparta, WI on May 12, 2015.  Attending the meeting were District III Directors, Carol Ballerstein, Carol Subera, plus the following MAREA members Anna Teska, Wayne Ledin, Barry Brubaker, Ruby Pinter, Mary Denk, Barbara Viegut, and Kathleen Hasenohrl.
  Joanne Runge presented Joan Zoellner a certificate and pin for being selected
 MAREA 2014 Volunteer of the Year. 


Carol Ballerstein reported that MAREA received a check for $100 from The WREA Foundation, which Carol presented to the treasurer,  Marlene Broeske.  The MAREA received this check  for recognizing currently employed teachers as part of the Public Education Outreach Initiatives.  Those teachers who received a letter of encouragement from one of our members were invited to a June or August meeting to be recognized and their meals will be paid.
April 20, 2015
The 5-minute spotlight was on Joyce Lohr, from Marathon.  She told of a long teaching career beginning in Iowa, and ending in Wausau.  She and her husband are busy traveling to India and other places to help to eradicate polio.


March 16, 2015
 5-Minute spotlight was shown on Linda Christianson.  Linda has two children, two grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.  Linda grew up in Bruce, WI.  When she was in high school, she would babysit for the teachers.  Linda’s English teacher who later became the guidance counselor had a big influence on Linda.  He helped her to get a scholarship to attend college up North where she became a teacher. Linda showed books that her grandmother wrote and beautifully illustrated.   Linda finished her teaching career at Edgar Elementary School.

5-Minute Spotlight
Ruby Pinter  was born near Bloomer and attended a one-room school.  She always wanted to be a teacher.  Ruby fell in love with sewing and with teaching Home Ec.  She taught in Abbotsford for 20 years.  She does quilting in her spare time.  She showed a quilt that she made as a gift.

5-Minute Spotlight 
Was given by Mavis Wood about her great-aunt and her early years of teaching.  Her ancestors came from Germany and settled in the area.

5-Minute Spotlight December 15, 2014
Marlene Broeske grew up on a dairy farm near Chile, WI.  Her family was Amish type farmers doing most of the work by hand.  Her family was "dirt poor". This motivated her to do better for herself.  She worked hard to get her degree and become a successful math teacher at Colby High School.  She also worked part time at North central Technical college in Medford and at the UW Marshfield/Wood County Learning Center.  She now volunteers tutoring math and English.
5-Minute Spotlight November 17, 2014
New member, Jerry Sjostrom, from Athens, shared a special French cookie and family recipe.  He was born in Hayward and spent 32 years teaching in Athens and 17 years teaching driver's education at Edgar High School.  He shared several driver's education stories.

5- Minute Spotlight October 20, 2014
Pat Tietyen grew up in Newton which is 100 miles East of St. Louis.  In Wisconsin, she taught in Eau Claire, Stevens Point, and the last 25 years in Marshfield.  Pat has traveled to Hawaii, Europe, and Costa Rica. Now she and her husband travel the country in their RV.


5-Minute Spotlight September 15, 2014
Sue Legner gave a 5 minute summary of her teaching career in Edgar and of her retirement activities including travel and quilting project which she showed to the group.



5-Minute Spotlight August 18, 2014

Barry Brubaker gave a short history of his teaching career including how teachers he had in his life have helped him throughout his career and to become the person he is today.  He also was a pilot and gave flying lessons.



5-Minute Spotlight was shown on Myrtle Prestebak who presented a short history of her teaching career.  Teaching eight grades in a one room was very different.  There was no water, so it had to be carried from a neighbor.  A basement under the school was dug by the WPA.  Then a cook volunteered to prepare lunches so the students would have a hot hot lunch at school.  A furnace was put in the basement where Myrtle built a fire every day.  Myrtle taught a total of 32 years.






 The April 2014 spotlight was on John Wood.  John Wood presented an interesting talk about his years spent in education, both learning and teaching from elementary school to high school and to college level.  He and his wife have traveled extensively since retiring, visiting many parts of the world including 18 elder hostels 
and several Christian missionary trips.

MAREA Membeer, John Wood, was intent on listening to the speaker, Alan Haney, Emeritus Professor of Forestry, at UW Stevens Point. Alan Haney spoke on climate changes that are a result of global warming.  John took many notes at the March 17, 2014 meeting.




The March 17, 2014 member spotlight was on Grace Dietel-Ensign.  After marrying and having children she finished her highs school education by correspondence course and went on to become a teacher finishing her degree by taking night classes and going to summer school.  She taught for 25 years.




On February 17, 2014,  Member Spotlight was on Mark Lacke.  He gave a heartwarming presentation about his involvement in the Make A Wish Foundation.  Because families are in such turmoil when they find out a child has cancer, he said his job is to calm them down and concentrate on talking to the child to find out who he wants to be, who he would like to meet, and what he would want for a wish. There is a follow up Family Wish Party to announce the wish, and the Foundation makes it happen.  Going to a Disney attraction is a popular wish. He talked about  “Give the Kids the World Village” that is separate from Disney World which is set up for handicapped kids.  There, they can swim in a heated pool, have ice cream at all hours, and there is medical staff on hand at all times.

The spotlight for the month was on Mary Denk.  She said she started teaching at age 19, and ended up teaching at Edgar for 30 years.  Her expertise was teaching reading.  One of the things she always wanted to do was to write a children’s book.  That dream was fulfilled when she had a book published recently titled “Anna’s Million Dollar Cow”.  It was illustrated by Mary Felten.  She had copies for us to purchase.  The book has global implications because it references a bridge to China that of “sister cities/rural areas” created by the dairy industry in Wisconsin,  linked to Chinese dairying efforts.  



Carol Ely, Mary Denk, and Barbara Viegut gave each MAREA member a Christmas sleigh made with candy. 

 
Karen Stevens is the new MAREA secretary.  Her term is from October 2013-September 30, 2015.

November 2013 Spotlight on Mavis Wood

The group learned about  MAREA member  Mavis Wood as she told about beginning her teaching career in a one room school.  She and her husband raised eight children, and have traveled extensively since retirement.  This past summer Mavis make a volunteer trip to Lithuania where she worked in an orphanage.

 rememberance of her volunteer work.
Carol Subera, Mary Denk, Carol Ballerstein, and Dave Bennett at  a district meeting with local leaders on October 29, 2013 at Chippewa Falls to discuss challenges, goals, and ideas of local organizations and the WREA.  This meeting was organized by District Directors Carol Subera and Carol Ballerstein.


The spotlight for October shone on Mary Luchterhand, a 30 year member of MAREA.    She spoke of her teaching career, which spanned 37 years, beginning in in a rural school for 6 years..  She went to night school to get her bachelor's and master's degree.   Mary finished her career at  Grant Elementary where she opened
an Early Childhood classroom.  We are fortunate to have Mary as an MAREA member.
October 21, 2013, Carol Subera entertained the group with right-left activity to celebrate MAREA's 40 years. During the activity Carol gave a history of the organization beginning in 1973 in Marshfield as MARTA, and included all changes that have taken place over the years.  She gave each member a bag filled with goodies.

Mary Denk and Carol Ely gave each MAREA member a gift of a refrigerator magnetic note pad,  an  erasable pen and a star sucker commemorating the MAREA 40 years.
